Things to see and do in Salisbury
Visit Salisbury Cathedral which was built between the years of 1220 and 1258. It is famous for having the highest spire in England at the height of 123 metres. A regular cathedral service is carried out here which can sometimes affect opening times of the attraction. The whole area itself is absolutely glorious with well-maintained lawns to double up the elegance of the buildings. It is possible to take a guided tour up the tower although a fee is charged but definitely well worth the views from the top.
Make your way up a hilltop to the north of Salisbury called the Old Sarum. This is where the original city was located and you can locate evidence of habitation from 3000BC all the way to 1219. The latter was the year when the Cathedral was relocated to its present location. You can enter the majority of the site for free but there is a fee applicable for entry to the Inner Bailey.
Another interesting visit can be made to Stonehenge, which is basically the ruins of a Neolithic monument which goes way back and the fact that some remains still exist is pretty impressive.
Free entry is available to the Bulford Kiwi. It is especially attractive to visiting or migrating kiwis who feel homesick. This is basically where the image of a kiwi bird was carved using chalk and it is 130 meters in height. The work was done at the end of WWI by soldiers from New Zealand who were waiting to go back home.
Visit the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum which is rather small but has a variety of items on display, mostly depicting the history of the city through the use of costumes, ceramics and pictures. It is definitely an interesting visit and informative at the same time so you can learn much about where Salisbury originates from and bits and bobs about its culture.
Also, take a sightseeing or regular bus to Stonehenge some 15km away from Salisbury which is a great monument going back to the Neolithic era somewhere around 2500 BC.
